2024: A Year of Challenges and Resilience
December 20, 2024 (McKinney, TX) – Chad Lesher, President of CSL Materials, reflects on the challenges and resilience of 2024. As we come to the close of 2024, it’s hard to ignore the weight of everything we’ve collectively experienced. It’s been a year of challenges on all fronts, but as I reflect, I find myself overwhelmingly impressed with the resilience we’ve demonstrated.
A World in Crisis: Global Events in 2024
2024 has been a year marked by conflict and uncertainty. From the war in the Middle East to the ongoing struggle in Ukraine, the world has felt a constant state of tension. A contentious and emotionally charged U.S. Presidential election, coupled with the sitting President’s decision to abandon his re-election campaign, only added to the overall anxiety.
We were confronted by an attempt on the life of a former President, reminding us all of the fragility of peace. On top of that, 2024 witnessed record levels of mass shootings, a deadly hurricane season, and continued economic anxiety. Inflation, interest rate cuts, and a general sense of unpredictability made this year particularly challenging for many.
However, in the face of all this turmoil, what prevails in my mind is the resilience of individuals and communities. Despite the overwhelming odds, so many of us have continued to persevere, fighting for what we believe in and holding onto the values that matter most.
The Roofing Industry in 2024: Navigating Change and Uncertainty
In our industry, 2024 brought its own set of hurdles. The four major TPO suppliers made headlines by announcing, then ultimately failing, to secure a price increase. Meanwhile, Home Depot entered the competitive field of roofing distribution, shifting the landscape once again.
Despite these changes, the overall pace of the market slowed slightly, as owners held onto their funds in anticipation of rate cuts. At the same time, private equity continued to make its presence felt, with roofing contractors across the country being acquired by larger investment firms.
This may sound like a lot, and it is—but even with these challenges, our industry continues to adapt, pivot, and evolve. We’ve seen contractors find creative solutions and, most importantly, a continued commitment to providing quality service despite the changing tides.
A Testament to Resilience
When I think about all that’s happened—both in the world at large and within our industry—it’s clear that 2024 was a year of great difficulty. Yet, amidst the chaos and confusion, what has remained constant is the resilience and determination that so many of us have shown.
The anxiety levels this year were at an all-time high, in the midst of that uncertainty, so many persevered. Many continued to do the work they love, fought for their businesses, and stayed committed to their core values. This tenacity, this unwillingness to give in, is what continues to fuel us and will carry us into 2025.
A Holiday Message: Hope for the Future
As we prepare for 2025, it’s likely that more challenges await us. The landscape of both the world and the roofing industry will continue to make headlines, and we’ll need to be ready to face whatever comes next. As we move forward, my wish this holiday season is simple: Be kind. Be empathetic. Support those in need and those who are disenfranchised.
Let’s hold our loved ones close, cherish the blessings we have, and do what we can to help those who are struggling. Whether it’s a kind word, a helping hand, or simply a listening ear, let’s be the light in the lives of others.
As you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, the New Year and/or whatever else you may observe, let’s take a moment to reflect on the strength we’ve shown and the hope we continue to carry forward. Here's to a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient 2025.
Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to all.
