The arrival of fall and cold weather can bring some challenges during installation and inspection. Every roofer faces different challenges when the temperature drops.

Here are some tips on how to deal with the approaching cold weather seasons:

TIP #1: Use Bad Weather Days for Training

When the weather is making it tougher to be a roofing contractor, consider moving the workday indoors with Raining or Snow Day Training. This customized training can include any topic that is preferred by the group and can include:

  • New Product Overview

  • Best Practices Training

  • Installation Demos

  • Detail Review with Hands-on Installations

CSL can come to your facility for this specialized training experience and can include building envelope demos and presentations tailored for your team.

TIP #2: Install Products Designed for Cold Weather Application

Certain Carlisle SynTec products are specifically designed for cold weather application and can save you from lost workdays.

SynTec’s FleeceBACK RapidLock Roofing System is one example. This membrane attachment method provides a fully-adhered TPO or EPDM system without the use of adhesives. It also includes hail and puncture coverage along with FM ratings.

If FleeceBACK is not an option, Carlisle has non-traditional adhesives to utilize when the temperature drops. Carlisle’s Cav-Grip III Low-VOC Primer & Adhesive, which can be used in temperatures as low as 25°F when used as an adhesive and in temperatures as low as 15°F when used as a primer.

TIP #3: Properly Store Materials and Allot Extra Time to Warm

Since extended storage in cold temperatures may cause standard bonding adhesive to thicken or solidify in the can, you will want to make sure to properly store materials when cold weather hits. Accordingly, it is a good idea to allot extra prep time for warming materials for the workday. Examples include:

  • Membrane will not relax as quickly in cold weather - allow extra time for the membrane to relax.

  • Adhesives and Sealants should be stored in locations where temperatures are between 60 and 80° Fahrenheit.

  • When working on the roof, adhesives and sealants should be rotated in hot boxes to ensure the temperature of the product stays above 40° Fahrenheit.
